Ordering Books and Reports - FAQs

Information such as actual dates of births, marriages and deaths can be obtained from birth, marriage and death certificates. Before ordering your book or research report, it is important to check to see if you or family members have any certificates that can provide additional information. Where these are not available they can be ordered and provided with the book.

Provide information about schools attended, if possible. We can normally obtain information about the schools if the actual school attended is known.

Check to see if family members have any photos of places where ancestors lived or worked. Where this is not the case, we can often obtain old photos of towns and villages, and sometimes workplaces to include in the book.

You may also find written evidence of where an ancestor worked. Sometimes this is provided in census records but often not. Look for old leaflets, order forms, etc, with a company name. Old photographs can also provide evidence, e.g. company vehicles or outings.

Census records can confirm type and location of workplace and, often, sbout other family members.

Street directories can provide evidence of occupation between census dates - as well as showing who your ancestor's neighbours were. This directory page shows that residents in Southampton Street, in the mid 1860s, included a caker & confectioner as well as grocers and beersellers, a laundress, a boot & shoe maker, an estate agent, a milliner and dressmaker and a school.

Census records can provide information about an ancestor's siblings. This can lead to discovery of their descendants/living relatives throughout the UK and, sometimes, abroad.
